New traffic measures as Blandford Waste Management Centre works continue

Work on the new Waste Management Centre in Blandford is moving ahead well, with the project on schedule.
Key parts of the construction, such as the A350 filter lane and junction, and drainage improvements, are progressing as planned. Over the last six weeks, temporary traffic measures have been in place to ensure safety during these roadworks.
Four-way traffic signals remain in place at Hill Top Roundabout to allow drainage work to continue. These signals are expected to stay in place until Wednesday, 30 April 2025. However, drivers can look forward to a break during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, as temporary traffic lights will be removed from Friday, 18 April, to Monday, 21 April.
Later, from 1 May to 9 June, two-way traffic signals will manage traffic flow between Sunrise and Hilltop Roundabouts to allow drainage systems and access roads to be built. Once the new access road is mostly finished, the traffic management measures on the A350 will no longer be needed—a major milestone for the project.
The environment is an important focus of this work, with steps taken to protect local wildlife. A special fence has been installed to keep badgers safe and avoid delays caused by their presence during construction. The team is also reusing materials from the roadworks to speed up development and save money.
Archaeological studies at the site have revealed evidence of an ancient settlement from the Iron Age, which later continued into the Roman period. Items found include pottery, a horse harness ring, and a Neolithic flint arrowhead, highlighting the historical significance of the site.
Councillor Jon Andrews, Cabinet Member for Place Services at Dorset Council, said: “This development shows our commitment to sustainability and innovation. The Blandford Waste Management Centre will be an important resource for Dorset, and we’re proud to see progress that takes care of both people and the environment.”
Phase 2 main construction works are expected to start soon, and the team is looking for ways to make the project more efficient while keeping it high-quality. The overall completion of the Waste Management Centre is planned for Autumn 2026. Dorset Council is dedicated to delivering this important project safely and with high standards.
